Project information
The A19 is a major A-road stretching from the Thirsk in North Yorkshire to Northumberland. Linking with the A1, and the A168.
These are essential in maintaining the network, keeping our customers safe and supporting the movement of essential supplies and services.
It provides not only a route for tourism and lorries moving goods up the east coast of the country; but it is also essential for local traffic accessing the many towns and villages along the route.
This year we are investing more than £135 million across the North East and Yorkshire in schemes that will improve and maintain our roads.
The Tees Viaduct was constructed in the 1970’s and over the years it has needed to have routine repairs and maintenance from time to time. In the last few years we have replaced most of its expansion joints.
Currently, we are making some repairs to the piers, which are the concrete structures that support the viaduct.
All the work is taking place underneath the viaduct and there are no lane closures on the main A19. In order to protect the workforce there is a lane restriction on the Portrack Lane roundabout, underneath the viaduct. If this changes, we will update our social media channels - @HighwaysNEAST, https://www.facebook.com/HighwaysNEast/ - and details will be updated on this page.
To carry out the concrete repairs safely we need to wrap the work area in plastic sheeting to reduce the amount of debris and materials leaving the working area.
This work will also include the replacement of the damaged bridge beam that was struck by a lorry in summer 2020 on the Portrack Lane roundabout.
While we are working below the bridge, we have imposed a weight limit for traffic on the viaduct to ensure the viaduct isn’t under any additional or undue weight loading.
We have let road haulage companies and convoy companies know about the weight restriction that is in place during the duration of these works.
Work is expected to be complete by Winter 2025.
