You can more details about the maintenance schemes taking place in the West Midlands below:

We carried out work on the A46 SRLPEI scheme last year which included installing a number of masts along the A46. These have been designed to capture renewable energy to power future technology. We’re returning to complete construction works which include an additional seven masts along the A46. Once installed, we’ll be able to provide relevant driver information via our variable messaging signs.

We’ll also install technology to provide information on the road condition. The aim of this technology is to help inform our customers of journey times, road conditions and improve safety. This will also allow drivers to plan their journey better or select alternative routes. This is a first step in reducing our carbon footprint by using renewable energy to power our technology.

We’ll work throughout the day, Monday to Friday. Construction will take place using lane closures and two-way temporary lights. These will be installed along the verge between Back Lane and Beckford Road. We’ll also complete outstanding work to two of the existing sites. There will be additional work required after February, but this will be to install, test and commission equipment.

We’d encourage drivers to stick to speed limits and follow appropriate signage to ensure the safety of those working on site and fellow road users.

We’ll do our very best to complete the work as quickly as possible, keeping disturbances and noise to a minimum.

We’ll be carrying out some essential maintenance work along the A49. As part of the work, we’ll be completing drainage repairs and road resurfacing to provide a smoother and safer carriageway for road users.

This work will be carried out under the following traffic management:

9 September to 13 September, 8pm to 6am – temporary traffic lights between Ross Road/Asda Roundabout to Ross Road/Walnut Tree Avenue.

16 September to 20 September, 8pm to 6am – full closure, in both directions, between Ross Road/Asda Roundabout to Ross Road/Walnut Tree Avenue.

During October, we'll need to install two additional full overnight closures at this location. Once confirmed, dates will be added to our webpage.

23 September to 23 October, 8pm to 6am on weeknights – lane closures approaching and on Asda Roundabout, and temporary traffic lights between Ross Road/Asda Roundabout to Ross Road/Walnut Tree Avenue.

During closures, a fully signed diversion route will be installed.

Diversion:

Access for frontages and emergency service vehicles will be maintained via escort vehicle.

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

Please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

We’re going to be working beneath the M5 viaduct between junction 1 and junction 2, carrying out planned maintenance. This maintenance is a continuous activity that happens beneath the viaducts in the West Midlands to ensure the motorways keep connecting the country.

We’re installing a system that prevents the deterioration of the steel reinforcement which in turn protects the concrete from damage. This reduces the need for future maintenance, meaning less roadworks impacting the motorways.

Our work will be below the viaduct and will have no impact on the M5 itself. The work will take place during the day. We may need some localised overnight closures of roads beneath the viaduct to set up the scaffolding for our work to take place. These will be minimal and diversions only very short. Where the works affect a local road, we will work with the local councils to find the safest and least impactful way to undertake the works.

We now need to carry out work to part of the structure that passes over Wolverhampton Road. To enable us to carry out this work, we’ll need to install 24/7 narrow lanes and a temporary 30mph speed limit on Wolverhampton Road beneath the M5 junction 2. Temporary bus stops will be in operation throughout.

To install the narrow lanes, we’ll work from 8 July 2024 to 10 August 2024, Monday to Friday. During this time, there will be overnight lane closures on Wolverhampton Road between 8pm and 5am. From 15 July to 19 July there will be daytime lane closures between 8am and 5pm. We’ll also install full overnight closures between Titford Road and Birchley Island on 8 August and 9 August, from 8pm to 5am.

We anticipate that our maintenance work on the viaduct will complete during 2025. We will share further information regarding the removal of the narrow lanes in due course.

During our closures, a fully signed diversion route will be in place via Birchfield Lane, Oldbury Road, Station Road, Cakemore Road, Penncricket Lane and Causeway Green Road. Bus stops within the closure will be suspended.

Diversion route:

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained. We will also maintain access for the ibis Styles hotel, the Ramada Hotel, Asda and ALDI.

We will do our very best to complete the work as quickly as possible, keeping disturbances and noise to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

We’ll be carrying out resurfacing work on the M5 between junction 4 and junction 4a. We’ll also be replacing the road markings at this location. Our work will provide smoother journeys, as well as reducing noise for residents living nearby.

Well work overnight, between 10pm and 4am, from Monday 30 September 2024 to Friday 11 October 2024, Monday to Friday. To carry out our work safely, we’ll close the M5 as follows:

30 September to 7 October – M5 northbound closed between junction 4a and junction 4.

8 October to 11 October – M5 southbound closed between junction 4 and junction 4a.

During closures, we’ll install the following fully signed diversion routes via the M42 and A38 Birmingham Road/Halesowen Road.

Traffic will exit the M5 northbound at junction 4a to join the M42 northbound. At junction 2 (Hopwood Park Interchange) traffic will exit the M42 northbound and join the M42 southbound. At junction 1 (Forest Island) traffic will exit the M42 and join the A38 Birmingham Road/Halesowen Road. Traffic can then rejoin the M5 at junction 4 and continue their journey.

Traffic will exit the M5 southbound at junction 4 to join the A38 Halesowen Road/Birmingham Road. Traffic will join the M42 northbound at junction 1 (Forest Island). At junction 2 (Hopwood Park Interchange) traffic will exit the M42 northbound and join the M42 southbound. Traffic can then rejoin the M5 at junction 4a and continue their journey.

Emergency vehicles will have access throughout.

If you'd like to receive updates about future work along the M5, please subscribe to our distribution list by emailing noreplyM5WMids@nationalhighways.co.uk.

We’ll be renewing and repainting parts of the structure underneath Spaghetti Junction, below the M6 and alongside the A5127 Lichfield Road. This work will ensure that the structure is well maintained and accessible for our operatives.

We’ll work during the day between, 7am and 5pm, from 1 October 2024 to 30 October 2025, Monday to Friday. The majority of our work will be carried out off network with no impact to the surrounding roads. However, there may be occasions where we need to lift equipment down to the worksite. In order to do this safely, we will need to install some slip road closures and lane closures.

We will keep our website up to date with any required closures. Please see below for further details:

There are no planned closures at this time.

During closures, we’ll install fully signed diversion routes. For all closures, traffic will be diverted to M6 junction 7 and back.

Emergency vehicles will have access throughout.

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We’ll also work to carefully manage noise levels and additional lighting.

We’d also encourage drivers to stick to speed limits and follow  appropriate signage to ensure the safety of all road users.

We’ll be carrying out resurfacing and bridge joint repairs along the M6 between junction 8 and 10 due to the deteriorating condition of the road here. Our work will ensure that the structure and carriageway are well maintained and continue to provide safe travel through the Midlands.

When will this work take place?

We plan to start work on Monday 8 April 2024, and we expect to finish on 4 February 2025. Our work will take place overnight when traffic counts are lower, between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday. However, there may be some additional weekend work needed.

To carry out our work safely, we’ll work under a combination of full carriageway closures and lane closures, between junction 7 and 10. We’ll start work on the southbound, from 8 April to 18 July, and then work on the northbound, from 18 July 2024 to 4 February 2025.

Update – We’ve had to rearrange our programme because of lost shifts caused by poor weather throughout the scheme and other unforeseen circumstances. Now, due to multiple football matches nearby, events at the Utilita Arena and holiday embargo periods over the coming months, this scheme is scheduled to be completed on 4 February 2025. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience this may cause.

This work will be carried out under the following phases:

Northbound

Phase 1 & 2 – 19 July to 6 September – full northbound carriageway closures from junction 7 to 10, including an outside lane closure on southbound carriageway. On Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September, between 9pm and 6am,  there will also be a full closure of the northbound entry slip at junction 10.
