High Speed 2 (HS2) works on National Highways network

Project information

Works taking place

HS2 works that are taking place on the National Highways network will be shown below.

To enable further preparation for the installation of the Coleshill Box structure, HS2 contractors Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) will carry out changes to the temporary safety barrier on the central reservation of the M42 between junctions 7 and 8 northbound and junction 9 to 7 southbound. To ensure the safety of their workforce, there will be closures on sections of the motorway overnight only, from 9pm on Saturday 14 September to 5am on Monday 16 September.

Traffic management Dates

  • M42 Northbound carriageway, junction 7 to 8, and the Northbound connector road from M6 Northbound at junction 3a to M42 northbound – from 9pm on Saturday 14 September to 5am on Sunday 15 September
  • M42 Southbound carriageway from junction 9 to junction 7 and M6 Toll Road southbound from junction T2 – from 9pm on Sunday 15 September to 5am on Monday 16 September

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place over this period with advance signage in place to help inform motorists of the closure.

In order to work on the A38 Overbridge, HS2 contractors need to close A38 Southbound, Streethay from Friday 30 August 9pm to Monday 2 September 5am.

Diversion

Drivers travelling south will:

  • leave the A38 at Hilliards Cross
  • take Wood End Lane to join the A515 Tewnals Lane
  • continue to the A51 Stafford Road
  • take the A5192 Eastern Avenue to rejoin the A38 southbound

The diversion will be fully signed.

HS2 contractors Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) are working with National Highways to progress with the build of the M42 twin box, which will carry the new HS2 line over the M42, to prepare the area for construction BBV will need access to the central reserve of the M42 carriageway between Junction 6 (Bickenhill Interchange/Birmingham Airport/Birmingham International Railway Station/NEC and Resorts World) and Junction 7A (Coleshill Interchange)

To create a safe working space, BBV will need to install narrow lanes on sections of the M42 with some overnight closures for the duration of these works.

The narrow lanes will be in-place until the M42 twin box structure has been built.

Overnight closures will be in place as follows

  • M42 northbound, Junction 6-7A, will be closed for 4 nights on 19 August - 22 August between 9pm – 5am.
  • M42 southbound, Junction 7A – 6, will be closed for 7 nights on 30 August – 6 September between 9pm – 5am.

For the overnight closures a fully signed diversion route will be in place.

When BBV close the M42 Northbound on 19 August 2024, they will carry out an adjustment to the traffic management on the link road to the southbound M6, to avoid further closures in September.

The adjustments will not affect daytime journeys from M42 towards Coventry on the M6.

During the daytime there will be traffic management in place, with 3 lanes available for road users and a speed restriction of 50mph.

Please allow more time for your journeys, observe the 50mph speed limit and follow the diversion signs during the overnight closures.

This will reduce the lane availability from two running lanes of traffic to one and will be in place from 24 August 2023 until further notice.
