Works update – July/August 2023
Our project to build a new roundabout on the A27 to provide better, safer access to Brighton City Airport and the New Monks Farm development is progressing well.
From Wednesday 2 August, there will be no right-hand turn from the A27 westbound onto Coombes Road. This will be a permanent closure – please follow diversion signs.
Westbound works
From Monday 7 August to Saturday 2 September, we’ll need to close sections of the A27 westbound on weeknights between 8pm and 6am. Drivers will be diverted via A283 and A24.
During this time, we’ll take the opportunity to carry out some additional maintenance work between Hoe Court and Lancing Manor roundabout to improve safety and reduce the risk of skidding.
From Monday 14 August to the morning of Saturday 19 August, the A27 will be closed westbound on weeknights (8pm-6am) between:
- Hoe Court and number 52 Old Shoreham Road
- the crossing and Lancing Manor roundabout

Works update – June 2023
Temporary barriers and westbound lane closures remain in place around the Shoreham flyover following last month’s road traffic incident. We’ll be carrying out repair works soon.
The Old Shoreham Road has been closed at the junction with the A27 and traffic is now being diverted via the new roundabout. Part of the Sussex Pad junction will also be closed and means that:
- there is no right turn from the eastbound filter lane to Old Shoreham Road
- there is no left turn from the westbound filter lane to Old Shoreham Road
- there is no right turn out of Old Shoreham Road onto the eastbound carriageway
Work has started on The Drive and Coombes Road junction to install storm water drainage and carry out resurfacing work. Traffic management is in place here 24/7 and access to the college will be maintained.
We’re also upgrading the existing Public Right of Way (249 – River Adur) to join with the New Monks Farm development which will improve access for pedestrians and cyclists.

We’ve installed temporary barriers and reduced part of the A27 westbound to two lanes over the Shoreham flyover interchange. This is due to a recent road traffic incident.

We’ve put these measures in place to keep the travelling public and our workforce safe. Please continue to take extra care when driving.

We’ve started to carry out some surfacing work and put in storm water drainage on The Drive (off the Coombes Road Junction) on the northern side of the A27. Traffic management will be in place here 24/7 and access to the college will be maintained. We’ll be working here during the day until Sunday 14 May.
We’ve also begun upgrading the existing Public Right of Way (249 – River Adur) to join with the New Monks Farm development which will improve access for pedestrians and cyclists. We’ll be working here until Friday 26 May.
From Monday 15 May, we’ll start work at the Coombes Road Junction on the northern side of the A27 to install more storm water drainage and do some surfacing work. Pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted through the westbound layby. When we have lane closures, there will be a 40mph speed limit for motorists to keep our team and the travelling public safe.Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
What else is happening now?
We’re continuing our work on the main carriageway and have temporarily closed some filter lanes, footways, and cycleways.
The eastbound A27 filter lane from Coombes Road to the River Adur bridge will also be coned off until May so we can do some foundation work ahead of main construction.
We’ve opened the new footway and cycleway on Old Shoreham Road and can now close the existing one from Old Shoreham Road to the westbound layby entrance. Pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted via the footpath between the westbound layby entrance and exit.
There will also be a temporary closure of the footway and cycleway from the westbound layby exit to Mash Barn Lane (including the Bus Stop), but our team will guide any members of public safely through the works.
Project information
We're building a new roundabout on the A27 east of Lancing to give access to the New Monks Farm development and provide better links to Brighton City Airport.
The next phase of our work will see all westbound traffic rerouted onto the new A27 westbound carriageway around the roundabout with improvement works starting on the westbound and eastbound carriageways.
Work is expected to last until summer 2024 and will be carried out in stages to keep traffic moving and disruption to a minimum.
