North West LED roadside lighting upgrades
We’re cutting carbon emissions in the North West by switching to cleaner LED lights, making our motorways and A-roads greener and more energy efficient.
The north-west of England is one of the first regions to benefit from our ambitious plan to rapidly cut carbon from our road network by replacing 70% of our traditional streetlights across the country with greener, more efficient LED lights.
Why we need this scheme in the North West
We use thousands of lighting columns to keep road journeys safe on our motorways and major A-roads. The majority of these lights still use old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs.
We're working to replacing them with LED lights because they use far less energy than conventional bulbs to produce the same amount of light.
Depending on the type of bulbs we are replacing, this could reduce the energy we use for lighting by up to 65%.
LED lights also have a longer lifespan, meaning less maintenance and fewer replacements on our network, minimising the disruption to our customers and local communities.

Where we’re working
We’re currently surveying our road network to find opportunities to upgrade and install LED lighting.
We will always aim to keep disruption to a minimum when carrying out work on the roads we manage.
The upgrade work typically requires lane closures to keep our staff safe from moving traffic, particularly when we’re working in the central reservation or close to the carriageway.

We'll shortly be carrying out surveys at junction 12 of the M53 near Hoole Village, Chester.
As part of this, we'll also be clearing vegetation to provide safe working areas for the surveys to be undertaken. This is essential preparation work ahead of installing improved LED lighting later this year.
For safety the following road closures (8pm to 6am) will be in place:
- Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 July – M53 northbound junction 12 exit slip road and lane one (of two) on roundabout closed
- Thursday 1 and Friday 2 August – M53 northbound junction 12 entry slip road and lane one (of two) on roundabout closed
- Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 August – M53 southbound junction 12 exit slip road and lane one (of two) on roundabout closed
- Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 August – M53 southbound junction 12 entry slip road and lane one (of two) on roundabout closed
To ensure journeys are maintained, a clearly signed diversion route will be in place during each closure.
We always aim to work to schedule, but unforeseen circumstances may mean slight changes occur at short notice.
Every effort will be made to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. However, these works will generate some noise and disruption and we’d like to apologise in advance for any disturbance.
