You can more details about the maintenance schemes taking place in the East below:

We’re going to be carrying out resurfacing on the A1 northbound between junction 17 and Stibbington. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and better-defined road surface.

We plan to complete this work over two nights between Monday 9 September to Wednesday 11 September 2024. We will work between 9pm and 5am, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the A1 northbound between junction 17 and Stibbington, and divert traffic as detailed below:

Northbound traffic will be diverted off the A1 at junction 17 and travel east on Fletton Parkway, exiting the Fletton Parkway onto the Nene Parkway. Continue on the Nene Parkway until the Thorpe Road interchange. At the Thrope Wood interchange take the first exit onto the A47 and travel westbound to the roundabout. At the roundabout continue until the second roundabout, before rejoining the A1.

As part of our effort to reduce carbon emissions from roadside lighting, we’ll be carrying out surveys to help us upgrade the street lighting on the A12 between junctions 11 and 12 to LED.

LED lights are better for the environment and use far less energy to produce the same amount of light. They also last longer and require less maintenance, meaning fewer road closures to fix lighting in the future and more importantly, safer roads for everyone.

We plan to carry out these surveys over five nights starting on Monday 2 September 2024 to Saturday 7 September 2024. We will work overnight between 9pm and 5am, weather conditions permitting.

Closures and diversions

A large transformer is being transported on Sunday 15 September by road from Kings Lynn Port to National Grid’s substation in Norwich, to allow National Grid to provide renewable energy to homes and businesses.

The transformer weighs over 178 tonnes and 58 metres long. Due to the abnormal size, the vehicle moving them will be escorted by the police. As the load will move very slowly at 10mph, the police may temporarily hold traffic where necessary to allow the abnormal load to safely progress.

Due to the complexity of moving an abnormal load of this size, there will be disruption on the A47 between Kings Lynn and Norwich on Sunday 15 September, so please plan ahead.

The abnormal load convoy is expected to leave the King Lynn Port at around 8am and travel eastbound using the A47 eastbound carriageway.

The abnormal load will leave the A47 at Ipswich Road Interchange at around midday to complete its journey on local roads.

Please note, all timings are subject to change depending on progress. The A47 westbound carriageway is not affected and will remain open to all traffic.

To ensure there are minimal delays, some activities will be carried out ahead of the abnormal load being moved, including the removal of some road signs.

If you have any questions about the movement, please contact National Grid on 0800 319 6186.
