A120 Horsley Cross to Wix concrete road reconstruction
We're reconstructing the A120 between Horsley Cross and Wix in both directions, with work anticipated to start during 2027/28. Reconstruction involves completely removing the concrete road surface and some of the foundations, before rebuilding the road and resurfacing it with asphalt. We'll also be clearing drains, repainting road markings, inserting new reflective road studs (cat’s eyes) and replacing damaged safety barriers. This will improve safety, create a smoother quieter journey and extend the life of the road to make it fit for the future.
The East region has the highest concentration of concrete roads on our road network, including the A11, A14, A12, A120 and M11.
Around half of the old-style concrete roads will either have repairs or will be replaced during the next five years.
We’ll be using innovative techniques and new technology to provide a modern road that will last for decades to come, and which is easier and quicker for us to repair in future.
Why we need this scheme
The surface of concrete roads that were designed between the 1950s and 1970s have an average life span of 50 years. Their surfaces are now reaching the stage where they will need to be repaired or replaced for safety reasons, and to help them be less noisy and better to drive on.
This video explains the process we go through to rebuild concrete roads:
Benefits
Our road repairs will help improve the safety of the road surface. It is essential that we complete repairs to the potholes and cracking to ensure a smoother and safer ride on the A120. Once complete, we expect the life of the road surface to be extended by up to 40 to 50 years.
Project information
We’re closing the A120 between Colchester Road and Harwich Road in both directions so that we can carry out topographical and road surveys in preparation for rebuilding the concrete road between Horsley Cross and Wix, which forms part of our future years’ concrete roads programme.
This work will be carried out between 10:30pm and 4:30am each night:
